Tell us about your background and your current role…

I originally trained as a civil engineer, and over the last number of years my role has become much more environmentally focused. Most of my career to date has been involved with the water industry looking at the management of foul and surface water runoff, more recently specialising in delivery of SuDS design and flood risk services.  My current role is Managing Director of McCloy Consulting, however, I have been mindful in retaining a technical focus.

With regard to climate change what are the current issues facing your sector/area of expertise?

We have a real requirement to manage surface water differently within our landscape for many reasons including climate change adaptation. A large percentage if the industry is transfixed in sticking to traditional drainage methods of piping water to the nearest river or sewer rather than taking the time to explore other more resilient and climate change adaptive possibilities.

With regard to climate change, what do you expect the future issues and solutions to be in your sector/area of expertise?

The more exemplar and case study projects we have locally in integrated SuDS, the greater the demand will be for change. We have planning policy in place since 2007 which has driven a change to how flood risk should be considered as part of planning applications. The same robust planning policy (and legislation) is required for SuDS.
