Improving Biodiversity in the UK: Post–Pandemic Priorities to Tackle Nature’s Dangerous Decline

According to UK government’s own review of its progress towards its biodiversity goals, 14 out of 42 biodiversity indicators showed a long–term decline, including continued deterioration of UK habitats and species of European importance, as well as a decline in priority species. Furthermore, the 2019 State of Nature report found that populations of the UK’s most important wildlife had fallen by 60% over the last 50 years. Wildlife Trusts warn that there is not much time left to address the climate emergency and reverse the catastrophic decline in nature and wildlife. Yet, with the COVID–19 pandemic, biodiversity has not been at the top of the political agenda, and numerous countries, including the UK, are lagging on environmental policies.
